Don’t Let The Fire Go Out – Bryan Hutson

When I was growing up, The Hutson family had a wood stove.

One particular cold Indiana day, my parents went to town and left me in charge of the stove. My Dad said “Bryan, don’t let the fire go out.”
I was around 12 years old. I was probably watching cartoons or something and yes, the fire went out!
I grabbed some kindling, some newspaper and worked frantically for 20 minutes trying to re-light the fire. Then, I remembered that Dad had some oil in a squirt bottle. I used the oil and spread it on the wood and newspaper. Then I lit the match. POOF!  The fire jumped up and singed my hair and my eyebrows! Luckily I wasn’t hurt and the fire started!
I never let the fire go out again!
How many times had I heard my Dad say “Don’t Let The Fire Go Out”? Countless times, but I still allowed it to.
Our walk with Jesus is like a fire. There are times when it’s s raging fire! We’re passionate about our relationship, studying His Word, praying and witnessing to others and expanding His kingdom.
Then, we become distracted by life’s busyness, trials, temptations and heartache that we can easily allow the fire to go out. We have unconfessed sin, stop reading the Bible, our prayer life is non-existent and we stop sharing our faith.
We are responsible for our fire!
2 Timothy 1:6-7 “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Revelation 2:2-4 “I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.”

We must strive to make sure that our fire (passion) for Jesus doesn’t go out!
Has your fire went out? Is your passion for God not what it ONCE was? What is keeping you from experiencing the FIRE of God?
Prayer starter: “Father, forgive me for allowing life’s distractions to steal my passion for You! Rekindle my fire Lord that I may be used to build Your kingdom!  In Jesus name, Amen.”
