Trey Ivey – In Conversation

treyivey-feature2016I had the privilege of interviewing young, Southern Gospel artist, Trey Ivey this week. Trey shared a lot of information with me, so I could share it with you! I think you’ll enjoy our conversation.

Victoria: Trey, how did you get started playing the piano?

Trey: I started playing organ in my home church when I was 5 (my mom was the pianist). I didn’t even know about the “industry” until the Mike LeFevre Quartet came to my church when I was 16, introducing me to “quartet” music. I struck up conversation with Mike and he told me they were needing a piano player. So shortly after, still at 16, I began traveling with them. I was there 3 and a half years, then went on to play with a group out of Atlanta called The Old Paths for about 9 months before joining Legacy Five in January 2011.

Victoria: That’s awesome! Tell us where you are from and a little bit about your family.

Trey: I married Lauren on June 6th, 2015 at Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, VA. Best decision I EVER made! We have a brand new baby girl. Emerson Shea Ivey was born on August 10th, and she is perfect! Lauren and I are so grateful, not only for our new bundle of joy, but also for a healthy pregnancy/deliver/etc. We are so blessed.

Victoria: Aww that’s so sweet. You sound like a proud daddy! So, is there anything else new that’s going on in your life at the moment?

Trey: In addition to studio work keeping me busy, I just completed a new project I’m super excited about! Most every night, there is someone that comes to the product table and says to me, “My son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter plays the piano. What advice would you give them? Or how can they learn to do what you do?” This is where I got the idea of doing this Piano Instructional Series. What better way than to just sit down in a studio, and for an hour, give an in depth piano lesson? I’ve already taped 2 volumes, with volume 1 just coming out. My special guest artist on Vol 1 is Gerald Wolfe. Vol 2 will be coming out in the next year or so with Gordon Mote as the guest artist.

Victoria: That sounds great! How are your travels going now? Are there any tours coming up?

Trey: This has been a great year for Legacy Five. The most notable tour left on our calendar this year is our annual Jubilee Christmas Tour. If you have not seen this show, you’re missing out! It’s by far the best thing we do all year. Legacy Five, along with our friends Greater Vision and the Booth Brothers are doing eight of these concerts this December.

Victoria: Do you feel like God has been teaching you anything in particular lately?

Trey: Having our little girl has opened my eyes to a whole new perspective of God’s love for us as His children. I’ve heard other parents say this my entire life, but it never hits you until you have your own. How awesome that the God of the universe feels the way about all of us as I do when I hold Emerson in my arms.

Victoria: That is so true! What is your favorite place that you’ve ever performed?

Trey: Much more of a worship setting than a “performance,” but by far…the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. What better place to sing “In the Garden” than in The Garden?

Victoria: Wow! I bet that was awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to help us get to know you better! Last question, is there a website where people can check where you’ll be and come see you in concert?

Trey: Yes, it’s www.legacyfive.com.

Well, there you have it! I hope that you’ve been able to get to know Trey Ivey a little better through this interview. If Legacy Five is ever in your area, go check them out. They’re all great guys, and I know you’ll especially enjoy meeting Trey!
