Susan Whisnant – In Conversation

susanwhisnant-feature2016

One of the most beloved voices in Gospel Music is that of Susan Whisnant. Susan has a genuine Spirit about her and makes her fans feel like family. Her beautiful alto voice is what gives The Whisnants their distinct, rich sound. It was a pleasure to catch up with her recently.

Jennifer Wilkerson: How did you get started singing in Gospel Music?

Susan Whisnant: I began singing with my mom and dad when I was 12 years old. My parents had a quartet growing up, so I grew up traveling in a bus and going to sing every weekend!

JW: We know you travel with your family and sing as The Whisnants, how long has the group been singing and what’s it like traveling and ministering with your family each week?

SW: The Whisnants have been traveling since Jeff was 6 years old. They traveled on the weekends. We were married in 1998. Jeff and I surrendered to a full-time ministry in 1990. We have been totally dependent on it since 1994. I absolutely love traveling with my family and could not imagine singing without them.

JW: You recently sang for a Donald Trump rally. Not trying to get political here, but what was that like? Has that opened any doors for your ministry?

SW: We were privileged to sing the National Anthem for a North Carolina Donald Trump Rally. It was an incredible opportunity and an honor to meet Donald Trump. Many people saw the video. Sometimes you don’t know what affect it has on people.

JW: You have a brand new solo record coming out, I hear. That is so exciting. I personally loved your last one. So, give our readers the scoop and when can we expect a release date?

SW: I am currently working on a solo project. My tracks are done but have only recorded 5 songs so far. Jeff and I are producing and can’t wait for people to hear these great songs that we have chosen. It should be out by Christmas.

JW: You have one of the richest and most beautiful voices in Gospel Music- what is one of your vocal tips you could share with our singing friends who will read this?

SW: I’m honored to sing the best music in the world: Southern Gospel. I’ve just always tried to sing from my heart and within my range. I’m a low alto and try not to over sing a song. Just always make sure the message is conveyed!

JW: What is your favorite song to sing each night and why?

SW: My most favorite song to sing is probably “All Is Well”. The message in that song constantly reminds me that God is still God no matter what I’m facing.

JW: What has God been teaching you lately?

SW: God has been teaching me to trust Him in all things!

JW: How can fans get in touch with you and get a copy of your new solo project?

SW: You can visit our website at www.whisnants.com. We’re also on Twitter and Facebook!
