In March, I posed the question, “Do you have a maintenance ministry or a mission-minded ministry?” We discovered how the maintenance ministry has stopped growing, and has become more concerned with budgets, business cards, and buses than connecting with an audience. The mission ministry is focused on sharing the Gospel and reaching the needs of the community in which it finds itself.
So, in thinking about your music ministry, why not consider the following:
1. The maintenance ministry does its best to avoid any kind of conflict or controversy, especially if it could lead to bad publicity. The mission ministry seeks to think outside the box, try new ideas, and take risks, even if it could lead to conflict. It understands that sometimes, we need to shake things up before people can hear the Gospel with fresh ears.
2. The maintenance ministry is run by an administration who tries to keep everything balanced and orderly. The mission ministry encourages creativity, new ideas, and forward thinking.
3. The maintenance ministry is concerned with songs on the charts, a good reputation in the music community, and keeping current schedules and structures intact. The mission ministry realizes that these things are only tools to help bring attention to their message - they are not the message itself!
4. The maintenance ministry claims to minister to the unchurched, but never sings outside the sanctuary. The mission ministry tries to understand the people in the secular world and their needs. The mission ministry tries to find creative venues and ways to introduce the Gospel into the secular world.
5. When singing in a town, the maintenance ministry asks, “How many Gospel music fans live in this area?” The mission ministry asks, “How can we get this town interested in Gospel music?”
6. The maintenance ministry asks, “How can we get people to support our ministry?” The mission ministry asks, “How can our ministry support people?”
How does your ministry stand up? Do you have a maintenance ministry or a mission ministry?
