What Children Believe

"WHAT CHILDREN BELIEVE" is a great new song by Gold City. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. Not long ago I sat down with the writer, Jerry Salley, for a co-writing session. We talked about a lot of things but soon our conversation turned toward things that children say. And we began writing a song that was inspired by something my little boy said.

Recently I had several songs recorded by a family group, The Madari Kids. They perform in a theater in Branson Mo, and they range in ages 3-11 years old. Let me tell you, they are GREAT! If you get a chance to see them in Branson this year, please go.

I was talking to their mother about their first recording experience, and she told me that she had to correct some of the lyrics the kids had gotten wrong. She was telling me that they had Jesus healing a LEOPARD, instead of a LEPER.
After a good laugh I began to remember some of the other strange lyrics that I have heard kids sing. And just like Jerry Salley's song, it is funny What Children Believe.

Here are some of the messed up lyrics I've heard.

Song: OUT OF HIS GREAT LOVE - by the Martins
Actual Lyric: Out of His great love He picked me up
Set my feet on a sturdy rock
Performed by a child the lyric said:
Out of His great love He picked me up
Set my feet on a dirty rock

Song: Typical Day - by the Talleys
Actual Lyric: It's just another typical day in the life
Of a child of God
Performed by a child the lyric said:
It's just another difficult day in the life
Of a child of God

Song: Built On Amazing Grace - by the Florida Boys
Actual Lyric: Bought by the blood of the Lamb
Recorded in the Bible pages
Performed by a child it said:
Bought by the blood of the land
Recorded in the Bible pages

God Bless The USA - by Lee Greenwood
Actual Lyric: I won't forget the men who died
And gave that right to me
Performed by a child it said:
I won't forget the men who died
And gave it right to me

Song: I'll Fly Away - by Albert E. Brumley
Actual Lyric: I'll fly away
Oh Glory
Performed by a child it said:
I'll fly away
Oh Goody

Song: Mary Had A Little Lamb
Actual Lyric: Mary had a little lamb
It's fleece was white as snow
Many children get this one wrong and sing
Mary had a little lamb
It's flees was white as snow
I actually heard a child sing:
Mary had a little lamb
Each in quiet snow

But my all time favorite messed up words from a child came from a little eight year old girl in my home church many years ago. She is now an adult, a great singer and a mom. I'm sure she would like to forget the day she got up in church to sing
Sweet Hour Of Prayer. She got a little nervous and couldn't remember if the song was about Prayer or Sin. You guessed it! She got up and sang Sweet Hour Of Sin!

If you've heard any good ones along the way, please post them and share them with us all.

Until next time, keep on writing

My daughter Lauren ... at age 2 ... was singing ...

My best friend growing up thought the hymn "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" was actually "Blest Be the Tithe That Binds". In the same hymn, she thought the line that said "the fellowship of kindred minds" was really "the fellowship of kindred wives!" The kids of a friend of mine in Ohio used to sing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" with the line "with the jelly toast proclaim" instead of "with angelic hosts proclaim."
