Not Even One Thing

There’s a song written by Sara Groves that really speaks to my heart. It’s entitled “Just One More Thing.” As you listen, the lyrics remind us that life is hectic and we all have important things pulling at us on a daily basis. As she reaches the end of the verse, we’re reminded of something profound when she sings “at the end of your life your relationships are all you’ve got” which leads us into the chorus that says:

And love to me is when you put down that one more thing and say
I've got something better to do
And love to me is when you walk out on that one more thing and say
Nothing will come between me and you
Not even one thing

Ahh, understanding this is important! This lyric tells us one of the secrets to living a life filled with good relationships. What is it, you ask? It’s time.

Time is one of our greatest commodities. Although money is what buys us the necessities of life, as well as the extras our hearts might desire, the one thing money cannot buy is time. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. This makes the gift of your time priceless and the giving of your time to another, a truly loving act.

Jim and I are one of those couples who, after years of marriage, still like each other and would enjoy being together every day of the week. But alas, the singer’s life doesn’t afford such luxury. So, we’re apart three to four days each week. What makes this OK for us? First of all, we know we want to be together and most importantly, when we are together, we make time for one another.

When Jim gets home from the road, our time together is a priority. We go on dates, out to lunch, to a coffee shop, take a trip to the book store or simply make plans to stay home and relax. It really doesn’t matter WHAT we do, just that we do it together.

Are you making those you love a priority in your life? Or are you letting other things get in the way and come before them? When we make it a priority to spend time with those we we care about, we’re finding another way to say “I love you” and showing them nothing will come between us, not even one thing!
