This recording has been a long time coming. I have been waiting with baited breath to see what these guys could do on a mainstream recoding, and they did not disappoint. I stated in my review of their last recording (which wasn't a mainstream release) that they still needed some time to gel; let it be said here that these guys have gelled, and have done so, exceptionally well!
With the first strikes of the steel guitar and fiddle, you almost expect the Happy Goodman Family to step up the microphone to sing, as it drips of that Goodman sound; but Ricky, Loren and Greg turn in a stellar performance on the opener, "HERE FOR NOW"(which would be a great single release, by the way) and in fine fashion gets the recording underway before kicking things into high gear with the first single, "I KNOW HE CAN".
"WAVING ON THE OTHER SIDE" is a tremendous song of encouragement and fits Loren Harris like a glove before the tempo gets kicked back into high gear for the quartet sounds of "GET ON BOARD", which features the exceptional bass voice of Gene McDonald, who makes a couple more quest appearances on the recording.
With it's wailing saxophone (which I will admit that it does get overbearing at times), I can't help but think of Kenny G when I listen to "HE WENT ALL THE WAY FOR YOU". Featuring Ricky, the song is a highlight of the recording for me, as is another song which is a challenge to the church titled, "WE WILL", which features Ricky as well.
Loren is featured again on the upbeat, "LOVE, MERCY & GRACE" before the pace slows down for the heartfelt, "HE'LL NEVER FORSAKE", which features Greg Cook. The classic Wilburns tune, "OUTSIDE THE GATE" closes out the recording.
Ricky Atkinson wrote, or co-wrote, all but one song on this recording, and they are some of his best songwriting efforts to date. I am already ready to see what these guys do next. Despite the fact that they have big names behind the vocals, they have a big sound and one that is taking this industry by storm. I have always enjoyed the music of Compassion and considered them one of the best trios out there; but this collaboration is, without a doubt, a winning combination and one that can sing any other group off the platform.
