The Stage Isn’t the Goal — Obedience Is
In today’s world, everyone wants to be seen.
Social media makes it easy to compare our behind-the-scenes journey to someone else’s highlight reel.
We scroll past pictures of artists performing on big stages, signing record deals, and standing beside
well-known names — and we start to wonder, “When will it be my turn?”
But before you get discouraged, let’s look at the greatest example of all — Jesus Himself.
Eighteen Years of Silence
The Bible gives us one of the most fascinating snapshots of Jesus’ early life when He was just twelve
years old. We find Him in the temple, sitting among scholars and teachers, asking questions, and
astonishing everyone with His understanding. Even at that young age, His calling was obvious.
And then… silence.
From age twelve to age thirty, Scripture tells us nothing about Jesus’ public ministry. That’s eighteen
years of obscurity — no miracles, no crowds, no spotlight. Just quiet, steady growth. He worked with
His hands as a carpenter, served His family, and lived among ordinary people.
But that silence wasn’t wasted. It was sacred.
Those years were the training ground for His destiny.
When the time finally came, Jesus walked down to the Jordan River, was baptized by John, and Heaven
itself broke the silence:
“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
After eighteen years in private preparation, Jesus completed His entire life mission in just three short
years. Think about that — three years that changed the world forever.
Private Preparation Precedes Public Power
For young artists in the gospel music world, this truth should bring peace.
We all crave that big moment when the lights hit, the crowd stands, and the world finally hears our
voice. But if Jesus Himself took eighteen years to prepare for three years of impact, maybe we
shouldn’t rush our own process either.
What God develops in you privately is what will sustain you publicly.
If you try to skip the private lessons, the public platform will crush you. The private years are where
God shapes your character, humbles your heart, and tests your motives. Because the truth is — talent
can get you on a stage, but only character will keep you there.
So don’t despise the small opportunities. The Sunday morning service with twenty people. The open
mic night where no one claps. The late-night songwriting sessions that no one hears. Those are your
Nazareth years — where God is building something in you that the world can’t see yet.
When Heaven Says “Now”
When Jesus’ time came, He didn’t need to post a video, send a press release, or hire a promoter. Heaven
made the announcement.
That’s what happens when you wait on God’s timing.
He will open the doors no one else can open — and He’ll keep them open long after man would’ve shut
them.
You don’t have to hustle your way into rooms you’re not ready for.
You don’t have to network your way into influence.
When it’s your season, God will make sure the right people hear your voice.
And here’s the best part: When God announces you, no one can cancel you.
The Real Stage Is in the Secret Place
Don’t chase a man-made stage; chase God’s presence.
What you do when no one is watching is what determines what God can do when everyone is
watching.
Keep writing the songs that speak truth.
Keep showing up and serving faithfully.
Keep worshiping when the crowd is small or nonexistent.
Because when Heaven says, “Now,” it won’t matter who knows your name — the world will.
Remember, Jesus didn’t rush the stage. He waited for the Father to announce Him. And in just three
short years, He changed eternity.
So keep practicing in the shadows. Keep preparing in the quiet. Because one day, that private
obedience will become a public testimony — and you’ll realize every unseen moment was part of
God’s perfect plan.
