Sunday Inspirations: The Journey to the Cross

Sunday Inspirations: The Journey to the Cross
By Lisa Ramsey, AGM Editor
Before there was an empty tomb…
there was a road to Calvary.
A road filled with pain, rejection, betrayal, and unimaginable suffering. A journey that Jesus did not have to take—but chose to take anyway.
Have you ever stopped to think about what must have been going through His mind?
He knew.
He knew the betrayal was coming.
He knew the denial would sting.
He knew the crowd that once praised Him would soon cry, “Crucify Him.”
He knew the weight of the cross would press against His beaten body.
And still… He walked forward.
“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” — Isaiah 53:3
Every step toward Calvary was a step of love.
When the soldiers mocked Him—He kept walking.
When the crown of thorns was pressed into His head—He kept going.
When the weight of the cross became almost too much to bear—He didn’t turn back.
Because He wasn’t just carrying a cross…
He was carrying us.
Our sin.
Our shame.
Our failures.
Our brokenness.
“Surely He took up our pain and bore our suffering…” — Isaiah 53:4
Imagine the moment He stumbled under the weight of that cross. The physical agony alone is hard to comprehend—but even heavier was the spiritual burden He carried for all humanity.
And still… He chose obedience.
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but Yours be done.” — Luke 22:42
That’s what makes the journey so powerful.
It wasn’t forced.
It wasn’t taken from Him.
It was surrendered.
Jesus could have stopped it at any moment. He could have called down angels. He could have walked away. But instead, He chose the cross—because He chose us.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

The journey to the cross was not just about suffering—it was about redemption. It was about closing the gap between a holy God and a broken world.
It was about making a way where there was no way.
And when He finally reached that hill… when the nails were driven, when the sky grew dark, when He declared, “It is finished”…
That wasn’t the end.
That was victory.
“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.” — 1 Peter 2:24
Because three days later, the stone would roll away.
The journey to the cross led to the empty tomb.
The suffering led to salvation.
The sacrifice led to hope.
So this Easter, don’t just celebrate the resurrection—
remember the journey that made it possible.
Remember the steps He took.
Remember the love that held Him there.
Remember the price that was paid.
Because the road to Calvary…
was walked with you in mind.
Heavenly Father,
As we reflect on the journey to the cross, our hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude. Thank You for the love that chose the cross, for the sacrifice that made a way, and for the mercy we could never earn on our own.
Jesus, thank You for every step You took toward Calvary. Thank You for enduring the pain, the rejection, and the weight of our sin—all so we could have life. It’s hard to fully comprehend, but we are forever thankful.
Help us never to take the cross for granted. In the middle of busy days, traditions, and celebrations, draw our hearts back to the true meaning of Easter. Remind us that Your sacrifice was personal… that You saw us, loved us, and chose to go through it all anyway.
Teach us to live in a way that honors what You’ve done. Let our lives reflect Your grace, Your love, and Your truth. And as we celebrate the resurrection, fill us with hope, knowing that because You live, we have life—now and forever.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
