Guard Your Heart: Breaking Free from the Trap of Comparison
Hello, my Absolutely Gospel friends and family. As you know from the past many years, I love to write and share my heart and thoughts and maybe one of these days, I’ll finish this little “idea of a book” that I started years ago…
THOUGHTS FROM A DUSTY ROAD (Picking Up Pennies, Writing Down Life)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately I just had to share my thoughts about us comparing ourselves to other’s.
I’ve had to check my own heart on this more times than I’d like to admit… because if we’re not careful, we can slip right into that yucky trap of comparison before we even realize it. We start measuring everything—our talents, our voice, our work, our gifts, our looks, our bodies, our finances—and before long, the joy that God placed inside of us gets quietly stolen.
And the truth is, we know better. We’ve heard it, we’ve said it… comparison is the thief of joy. But knowing it and guarding against it are two different things.
I’ve found myself asking those questions… “Why can’t I do it like them?” “Why don’t I look like that?” “Why does it seem easier for someone else?” And every single time, if I’m honest, it pulls me away from the very thing God has uniquely called me to be.
Because here’s the truth we have to come back to—God didn’t make a mistake when He made you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. He didn’t give you someone else’s voice, someone else’s lane, someone else’s assignment… He gave you yours. And what He’s trusted you with matters.
When we finally grab hold of that—when we truly embrace His unconditional love and the gifts He’s placed inside of us—it changes everything. It brings freedom. It brings peace. It brings purpose.
So maybe today is a good day to draw a line in the sand.
Quit comparing… and start cultivating.
Quit looking around… and start looking up.
Quit wishing for someone else’s calling… and start walking boldly in yours.
Because what God wants to do through you will never be accomplished by you trying to be someone else.
Guard your heart. Protect the gift.
And be exactly who He created you to be—with confidence, with gratitude, and with persistent passion.
Now let’s go… and let’s be faithful with what we’ve been given.
