Sunday Inspirations: Mom Doesn’t Want Flowers… She Wants Your Time
Sunday Inspirations: Mom Doesn’t Want Flowers… She Wants Your Time
By Lisa Ramsey, AGM Editor
Mother’s Day has a way of filling stores with flowers, candy, cards, and gift ideas. And while there’s nothing wrong with celebrating moms in beautiful ways, sometimes I think what most mothers truly want can’t be bought in a store.
They want your time.
Not rushed time.
Not distracted time.
Not “checking your phone every five minutes” time.
Real time.
A conversation.
A visit.
A shared meal.
A phone call that lasts longer than two minutes.
A memory made while there’s still time to make it.
As life gets busy, it becomes so easy to assume there will always be another opportunity. Another holiday. Another visit. Another tomorrow.
But one day, you realize how precious those ordinary moments really were.
“Honor your father and your mother…” — Exodus 20:12
Honor isn’t just found in gifts—it’s found in presence.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give your mom is simply showing up. Sitting with her. Listening to her stories you’ve already heard fifteen times. Laughing together. Letting her know she still matters in the middle of your busy life.
And let’s be honest—most moms don’t care if the house is spotless or if the gift is expensive. They just want time with the people they love.
Truthfully, some moms would probably trade every bouquet in the world just to have everyone around the table together without somebody saying, “I can’t stay long.”
And if your mama is anything like most Southern mamas, she’ll still try to feed you enough food for three people while saying, “You don’t visit enough,” even as you’re standing right there in the kitchen.
But underneath the humor is something deeply meaningful:
Time is love made visible.
“Children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:18
For some reading this today, Mother’s Day is joyful. For others, it carries grief. Some would give anything for one more conversation, one more hug, one more ordinary moment with the woman who shaped their life.
That’s why moments matter so much.
The flowers will fade.
The candy will disappear.
The cards will eventually be tucked away.
But time?
Time becomes memories.
And memories become treasures we carry forever.
So this Mother’s Day, celebrate the moms, grandmothers, stepmoms, spiritual mothers, and mother figures who have loved, sacrificed, prayed, and poured into others.
And if you still have the blessing of time with them…
use it well.
Because more than flowers…
Mom just wants you.
“Her children arise and call her blessed…” — Proverbs 31:28
And one of the greatest ways we can call her blessed…
is simply by being present.
For those of us whose moms are already in Heaven, Mother’s Day carries a different kind of ache. I would give every flower, every card, and every holiday gift in the world for just one more conversation… one more laugh… one more drive together… one more ordinary moment that didn’t feel important at the time.
So if you still have your mom here with you, cherish the time. Because once someone you love becomes a memory, you realize how priceless even the smallest moments truly were.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of mothers—the ones still with us, and the ones waiting for us in Heaven. Thank You for every sacrifice they made, every prayer they prayed, every lesson they taught, and every moment of love they poured into our lives.
Lord, help us never take time for granted. Teach us to slow down, to be present, and to love the people around us well while we still can.
And Father… this Mother’s Day, for those of us missing our moms a little extra deeply, bring comfort to our hearts. Thank You for the hope of Heaven and the promise that in Christ, goodbye is never forever.
And if You don’t mind, Lord… give my mama a hug for me today. Tell her I still miss her, still love her, and still carry pieces of her with me every single day.
Until we meet again, thank You for the memories that still make us smile through the tears.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
