Sunday Inspirations: What Would Your Estate Sale Reveal?

Sunday Inspirations: What Would Your Estate Sale Reveal?
By Lisa Ramsey, AGM Editor
This week’s thought is a little different than usual… but maybe that’s because sometimes God speaks to us in unexpected places.
My sister and I enjoy going to yard sales and garage sales from time to time, and this weekend we stopped at an estate sale. At first, it was just another house filled with furniture, dishes, old decorations, and everyday belongings.
But then I walked into one particular room.
There on the bed was a bedspread identical to one my dad had before he passed away. And suddenly… something shifted in me.
The room no longer felt like a sale.
It felt like someone’s life.
I began looking around differently. The little trinkets, the antiques, the artwork, the kitchen items—it all started painting a picture of the person who once lived there. This was someone who clearly loved their family. Someone who enjoyed cooking. Someone who appreciated beauty and meaningful things.
And honestly… I started feeling a little strange. Almost like I was trespassing through pieces of someone’s story.
But then I noticed something else.
In room after room, there were Bibles.
Not decorative Bibles.
Not shelf-perfect Bibles.
Worn Bibles. Used Bibles. Loved Bibles.
The kind with pages that had clearly been turned over and over again.
And standing there in the middle of that house, one thought hit me deeply:
What would my estate sale reveal about my life?
Would people see evidence that I loved Jesus?
Would they know what mattered most to me?
Would there be signs that my faith was more than something I mentioned on Sundays?
Or would all that remain simply be… stuff?
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” — Matthew 6:19-20
It made me realize how quickly life passes. One day, all the things we spent years collecting become objects sitting quietly in a room while strangers walk through and examine them.
But faith leaves a different kind of legacy.
Faith leaves fingerprints on lives.
Faith leaves kindness behind.
Faith leaves prayers that continue echoing through generations.
“A good name is more desirable than great riches…” — Proverbs 22:1
What moved me most about that house wasn’t the antiques or decorations. It was the evidence of a relationship with God. The quiet testimony left behind in worn pages and well-used Scripture.
That person may no longer have been there physically…
but their faith still spoke.
And maybe that’s the question for all of us today:
If someone walked through the remains of our life one day… would they find evidence of Jesus?
Would they see love?
Grace?
Compassion?
Prayer?
A life lived for things bigger than ourselves?
Because at the end of the day, people may remember what we owned…
but they’ll never forget how we lived.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21
So maybe this week’s challenge is simple:
Live in such a way that when your story is all that remains…
your faith still speaks.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the moments in life that slow us down and make us reflect on what truly matters. Sometimes You speak to us in unexpected places—in memories, in ordinary objects, and even in quiet rooms filled with someone else’s story.
Lord, help us to live lives that point others to You. Let our faith be more than words we speak—let it be visible in the way we love, serve, forgive, and care for others. May our lives leave behind evidence of Your goodness, Your grace, and Your presence.
Teach us not to become so focused on temporary things that we forget what lasts forever. Remind us that possessions fade, but a life lived for You leaves an eternal impact.
And Father, when our own story is someday remembered, may people see more than what we owned or accomplished. May they see kindness. Faithfulness. Compassion. And above all else… may they see Jesus.
Thank You for the hope of Heaven, for the memories of those we love and miss, and for the promise that a life rooted in You is never wasted.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
