Chris Interviews Shane Mathis Of The Troy Burns Family

shaneAtlanta, Georgia has been a home to many southern gospel artist, most notably The Lefevres and The Nelons. This young man, who takes his place in the next generation of young artists, calls Atlanta home as well. He is the newest member of the Troy Burns Family.

Shane Mathis has always had a passion for the art of music. He grew up in a musically-inclined family. His great-grandfather was a professional opera singer while at the same time, he and Shane’s great-grandmother performed in churches all over the Atlanta area. You could say music is genetically apart of Shane’s DNA!

Shane has opened for and/or performed with Adam Crabb, The Hoppers, Naomi & The Segos, The Greene’s, Gerald Crabb, Gordon Mote, Crystal River, and The Inspirations. Bill Gaither once told him, “You are seasoned beyond your years.”

Shane recently joined The Troy Burns Family as baritone/keyboardist! He is currently touring full-time with TBF and is enjoying life on the road singing Southern Gospel music.

Chris Jenkins – How did you first discover Southern Gospel?

Shane Mathis – I have always grown up in a musically inclined family, but it wasn’t until the age of 10 years old that I was introduced to Southern Gospel music by a trio my grandmother was a part of called New Day!

C.J. – What is playing right now in your car or iPod?

S.M. – How We Love Album – Mark Lowry / I Want My Stage To Be An Altar – The Atkins / Sometimes It Takes A Mountain Album – Gaither Vocal Band / Tell Your Heart to Beat Again – Danny Gokey

C.J. – Who are some of your musical mentors/heroes?

CoverTBS.M. – I am blessed to work and minister all over the entire country with a group like the Troy Burns Family, and I definitely count Troy Burns as one of my biggest music mentors. Some of my others would include my grandmother Lynette Croy, my vocal teacher Amanda Graham Brown, and my good friend Jeff Sneed!

C.J. – If you could make your own all-star quartet, trio, or duo, who would the members be?

S.M. – My All Star Quartet: Tenor – Brian Free / Lead – Jonathan Martin / Baritone – Mark Lowry / Bass – Gene McDonald

C.J. – What’s the top album every SG fan should have?

S.M. – My new solo project of course! LOL It was released on May 9th, and it’s called “A New New Story” featuring two original songs written by Jerroll Lehman and I, and piano by the one and only Gordon Mote!

C.J. – Where have you always wanted to perform and why do you hope to get to someday?

S.M. – Being a native of Atlanta, GA. I always grew up going to hear Southern Gospel concerts at the Gwinnett Arena and being that it’s located in my home state, it would be a dream come true!

C.J. – If Christian music wasn’t in the picture, what would you see yourself doing as your career?

S.M. – While attending high school at Parkview (Lilburn, GA.) I had the privilege of honoring academically in the musical theater program there, and would probably say I would have to be a Broadway Actor!

C.J. – How do you feel about the direction of Southern Gospel music? What would you change if you could?

S.M. – Since the birth of the Southern Gospel Music Industry it has always be in a continuous cycle of change, mostly for the good! It’s obviously still changing today but I am confident that with all the young artists I see and know, building their own roots in the industry that we can look forward to a bright future ahead! Also, if I could change one thing it would be the location of where we hold the NQC back to the Louisville, Kentucky location.
